HERBAL REMEDIES IN CANCER TREATMENT: LICORICE ROOT AND NETTLE OR STINGING NETTLE
Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra)
We all know the taste of the delicious black sweet, blackstrap molasses licorice. Licorice in herbal tincture form is wonderful for enhancing energy levels by supporting the body’s adrenal glands. It contains glycyrrhizin, a glycoside that is believed to prevent the growth and metastasis of some forms of cancer.
Licorice can protect cell membranes from haemolysis (the rupture of red blood cells). It also boosts the body’s immune system by stimulating the production of interferon.
Licorice is a beautiful herb for improving the flavour of other nasty tasting herbal mixtures and counteracts the effects of stress.
What is the best way to take licorice?
• Decoction – put 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of the root in a cup of water, than bring to the boil and
simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink 3 times daily.
• Tincture — take 1 to 3 ml of the tincture 3 times daily.
Warning!
Taking excess amounts of licorice can be detrimental to health as it causes a loss of potassium from the body. Do not take if you have high blood pressure.
Nettle or Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica)
The general public has no idea just how valuable this medicinal plant actually is. Apart from its amazing blood cleansing and building properties, it also serves as an excellent cancer preventative, as it strengthens and supports the entire body.
Nettle herb assists with liver, gallbladder and spleen disorders, as well as lung, intestine and stomach congestion. As a blood builder, it is extremely useful for treating anaemia and other blood disorders. Nettle herb is also a mild diuretic that is often used by men to improve prostate problems.
In Maria Treben’s book, Health Through God’s Pharmacy, she notes two cases of people who claimed to have removed cancerous growths in the stomach and in the spleen through regular use of nettle tea. However, science refutes these claims. At present, not enough research study has been performed on nettle tea to allow scientists to understand its unique healing properties.
What is the best way to use stinging nettle?
• Herbal tea – 1 heaped teaspoon per % cup of boiling water, infused for 5 to 10 minutes.
Drink as needed.
• Tincture – take 1 to 4 ml of the tincture 3 times daily.
