WHY DO I LOVE FOOD

March 11th, 2009

There are many theories to explain how the brain regulates food intake. One argues that there are two separate entities located in the hypothalamus (a small part of the brain). One is the feeding center and the other the satiety center. The feeding center sends out a signal to eat when your body requires nourishment, and the satiety center shuts down the appetite when you’ve had enough. Studies have shown that if you stimulate a laboratory animal’s feeding center, it will eat. On the other hand, if the animal’s feeding center is damaged or destroyed, it loses its appetite.

Another theory proposes that certain hormones are responsible for telling the brain when you’ve had enough to eat. The interaction of food and the stomach prompts the release of a hormone or group of hormones that travel to the brain and turn off the appetite. A gastrointestinal hormone called CCK (cholecystokinin) may be one of these “I’m full” hormones. Indeed, animals injected with CCK stop eating.
