MISSING OUT OR FEELING CHEATED:AT HOME – LISTLESS; INDECISION

March 12th, 2009

At home there are two routes: either he becomes out of sorts, listless and dull to be with, or, he becomes diametrically the opposite, energized, full of vitality, a partygoer, king of the nightlife.

In both instances although he values the security of home he feels trapped by it and in private moments fantasizes how life might have been had he not so hastily married.

He wanders about bored, beating a regular path to the kitchen to raid the refrigerator for a little snack. He complains of feeling tired and wants to go to bed earlier each day, rarely much after 9.30 p.m. Household repairs if ever started are never completed. He feels ill.

The attitude is that nothing seems to matter any more. Nothing appears important enough to justify his making a decision even if it is as simple and homely as which movie to see or whether to cook spaghetti at home or eat Chinese take-out. You choose, it doesn’t matter becomes the catch phrase.

Emotionally depressed, few practical decisions can be made. The menopausal man prefers to rely on others for their advice and their decision. He is floundering and trying to sort out his own muddled existence. Compared to the self-doubts fermenting within him these day-to-day decisions can seem trivial. He is difficult to be with.
